  • Chrysler’s minivan continued to lead the market it created with total sales for the 1989 model year of 403,393.  The Plymouth Voyager accounted for 184,694 of the total and kept a healthy share of the market with the 1990 models.

Since 1983 Chrrysler sold every minivan it could make.  A second plant was added in 1987, and the company then, still outsold every one, with virtually no incentives or rebates.  Other car makers rushed to market with their versions of the minivan, and the market just grew to absorb them.  As minivan models proliferated, Chrysler’s share of the number declined from three quarters to half, but not its volume.

For the 1990 Voyager there were two engine choices in addition to the standard 2.5-liter EFI four cylinder.  THere was the more powerful 2.5-liter SMPI Turbo I and the sophisticated 3.0-liter Mitsubishie built V-6 with 142 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque.

The nicest thing about having the right product at the right time was that everyone wins.  Baby Boomers knew the right car when they saw it, and the minivan was it.  Many of them found two or three as testimony to the rightness of the idea.  Chrysler’s reward was a group of loyal, affluent owners.  With its unstoppable sales appeal, the minivan was the vehicle most responsible for driving the company out of bankruptcy and into prosperity.
