1990: Saturn Reaches For the Sky
GM sources said Saturn, the Generals newest car-making division, was pushing hard for a convertible built off the Saturn Coupe. The Saturn program, a $3 billion clean-sheet-of-paper approach to design and build American cars to equal Japan’s best, initially produced a coupe and sedan for its introduction as 1991 model vehicles.
Along with an anticipated 3-door model expected for 1992, the convertible was reportedly expected for a 92-93 introduction.
Aftermarket design outfit ASC was believed to be the prime contractor for the drop top, ensuring a rigid boot over a low top stack for the cleanest possible lines when the top was down.
