01990: Toyota Plans Full-Size Pickup
It was 1990 and it was certain that, within the coming few years, Toyota Motor Corporation would become the first Japanese manufacturer to enter the lucrative U.S. light-truck market with a new line of ‘full-size’ pickups. The new trucks, to be produced here in America were expected to offer both V-6 and V-8 power and a choice of 2- or 4-wheel drive. Styling would likely be similar to Toyota’s contemporary mini-trucks. Also rumored, the company planned to market a SUV and crew-cab versions. Though the production T100 wasn’t exactly full-size, it did resemble the familiar smaller Toyota pickup, unlike the bold rendering below.
