1990 Volvo 740 Turbo Test Drvie
By the late 1980’s, Volvo imported more turbocharged car into the United States than any other manufacturer. For 1990, the Swedish carmaker’s 2.3-liter SOHC inline-4 with intercooled turbo could be found in three models including the 740 turbo.
As the mainstay of Volvo’s fleet for a number of years, the turbo engine was distinguished by excellent low-end performance, smooth and progressive boost, and a sporting powerband.
Vis-a-vis the rest of the 740 fleet, the urbo still had the longest legs of the bunch, by quite a few strides. With 0-60-mph time around 7.8 seconds, the 740 Turbo had nearly 2-seconds on its free-breathing brother the 16-valve GLE.
