1991 Buick Park Avenue Ultra Test Drive
Buick’s second-generation front-drive luxury sedan was rounder, roomier and a touch more sophisticated than the car it replaced. The 1991 Park Avenue and the plusher Ultra version were extensively revised 6-passenger cars represented Buick’s second shot at a downsized luxury sedan. Downsized, that is , compared to the enormous rear-drive sedans superseded in the mid-Eighties by a more efficient front drive package.
But buyers wanted more room, so the 1991 Park was larger than the 1990 with the addition of about 8 in. of length to the platform. Overall length was now 205 in., about the same as Lincoln’s Continental or a shift knob short of S-class Mercedes Benz, and its EA interior volume index was up to 130 cu-ft, with almost 5 cu ft more for passengers and 4 cu ft more trunk room.
The Park Avenue and Ultra were clearly Buick’s best attempt yet to translate the old, large American-car idiom into more efficient and contemporary terms. The new cars straddled a fence that divided older buyers preferences toward the roomy with detached dynamic motions, against an optional gran Touring package with better throttle and steering response, more control of ride motions and therefore, younger thinking buyers.
