1991 Chevrolet Caprice Test Drive

For those who still preferred the carlike feel and the humongous luggage capacity of a station wagon, a wagon version of Chevrolet’s 116-inch wheelbase, full size frame car was available for the 1991 model year.  A fuel-injected 5.0-liter V-8 was the standard powerplant for both the sedan and the wagon, but there was an optional throttle-body-injected 5.7-liter V-8 offered as part of the police fleet version,  and this certainly gave the hefty car a much needed shot of torque.  Naturally, all Caprices were fitted with four-speed transmissions.

For years, the Caprice’s optional F41 performance suspension had been the answer to the floppy handling of the base car.  Because the standard suspension of both the 1991 Caprice and the luxury trimmed Caprice Classic sedans still had a surprising amount of low speed jitter in it, the F41 system was still recommended  for a more positive feel and better roll control.  That package included 225/70R-15 tires and a 2.56:1 axle ratio.  There was also a trailer package labeled F92 that allowed a remarkable 5000-pound trailer towing capacity. Scotchgard-protected interiors were standard on all Caprice models, with leather an option on the Classic version.
