1991: Coupe-like Sedan, When Coupe-like Sedans Weren’t Cool
Nissan and Toyota diverged in their interpretations of personal luxury automobiles for their upscale divisions. While Toyota’s Lexus division introduced a mechanically similar coupe to the LS400, Infiniti introduced a more distinctive coupe-like four door.
Toyota’s gamble was the more daring, because it would counter in what was a declining coupe market. Nissan planners, on the other hand, believed buyers in the segment needed four doors but wanted the stylishness of a coupe. Their solution was the 1993 J30, that was the size if a bit larger than the Nissan Maxima and featured a coupe-like convex backlight, faux-pillar-less doors, C-pillars that evoked a coups sail panel, and a body that, when viewed in profile, exhibited a front to rear equilibrium rarely seen among contemporary wedge-shaped sedans.
The two Japanese luxury entries definitely departed in styling, with Lexus taking a far more radical approach, pricing would favor the Infiniti.
