1991 Dodge Spirit Plymouth Acclaim Commercial

Plymouth’s Acclaim and Dodge’s Spirit lost its turbo option for 1991 but gained extra-cost anti-lock brakes.  A top line LX Acclaim again came with a 141 horse 3.0 V6engine and four speed ultra-drive automatic transmission.

Had one… It honestly wasn’t too bad, but the transmission wined at around 45mph, took it in and they said; “that’s normal”. This thing had a SUPER low first gear and would spin the CRAP out of the tires. I used to think it was SO fast… lol

My dad bought an ’89 Spirit ES brand new, and after about 2 or 3k miles, it had trouble shifting out of 2nd. The tranny was junk from the factory.

No, sir. The Spirit and Acclaim could be had with a 2.5 Turbo engine and 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission through 1992 in the US, Canadian, and (badged as a Chrysler Saratoga) in the European markets; through 1995 (with intercooler and badged as a Chrysler Spirit) in the Mexican market.

For 1991 and 1992 there was another turbo option: the Dodge Spirit R/T came with a 2.2 DOHC intercooled turbo engine with cylinder head and assorted other parts engineered and/or manufactured by Lotus. These cars came only with a Getrag-geared 5-speed manual transmission. There were 1,208 of them made for the US/Canada market in 1991, in red or white only. For 1992 silver was added as an available colour and there was some smaller total number made. This package was available in the Mexican market through 1994 or ’95, as well.
