Explorer, a new nameplate from Ford Motor Co., was the latest addition to a family of work vehicles with an indisputable reputation for being tough. Over the decades Ford trucks demonstrated the ability to get the job done, no matter what the conditions. What’s different about this new line, though, was the unprecedented level of comfort and convenience features such as a leather interior or a compact disc player that in the past were available only in passenger cars.
This combination of tough and tender made the two- and four-door Explorer’s ideally suited to a get up and go outdoor lifestyle, Ford maintained. Explorer models provided attractive alternatives to either a conventional passenger car or a mundane work truck. These vehicles were equally at home in the valet parking lot at the country club or camping out in the Red River valley. They represented the best combination yet produced by Ford of the popular attributes of both car and truck worlds.
