1991-Nissan-Sentra2

For years Nissan’s Sentra was  the place horse in the subcompact race, trailing Honda’s Civic and Toyota’s Corolla. But in 1991, the bookies would have to refigure their odds as Nissan made a run for the lead with its all-new Sentra.

Once again, Nissan’s continuous injection of enthusiasm into its products aid off.  Refinement was the keynote of the new Sentra,  beginning with its engines.  The base powerplant still displaced 1.6-liters, but a new 16-valve head equipped with variable valve timing and driven by silent chains instead of belts put output from 90 to 110 bhp, putting it a nose ahead of the Civic SI’s 108. A new subframe helped isolate road noise, while struts with offset coil springs preserved good ride quality: front and rear anti-roll bars reserved hospitable handling manners.
