01991: Saab 900 Replacement Gets Help From the Giant
One of the longest evolving models on the planet, the Saab 900 was finally replaced in 1993 as a 1994 by a car that shared the platform and certain structural elements with the Opel Vectra. But the tuning of the suspension was 100 percent Saab, and the Swedes used their own sheetmetal and cabin trim.
The car was developed under the code name 104, but was rumored to be renamed 990. Designed in-house by Björn Envall, the 990 looked more contemporary but retained Saab styling elements, especially in the front end and bumpers. The rear however, had a new styling theme accentuated by unique taillights. Offered as a two-door, or four-door, and later a convertible.
Engines initially were restricted to the familiar Saab four-cylinder, but partner General Motors would help out with a brand new V6. In addition to Saab’s usual front-wheel drive layout, four-wheel-drive was rumored for this and all of Saab’s future cars.
