1992: Amati Unscrambled Spells Miata
Mazda’s long awaited answer to Acura, Infiniti, and Lexus was supposed to launch in America for the 1994 model year with two luxury sedans. The cars, developed under the code name Pegasus, were to be marketed under the brand name Amati, derived from the Latin word for love-or from a family of Italian violin builders, said its unabashedly romantic marketers. Unscrambled it also spells Miata.
Mazda revealed little about little about the forthcoming cars other than to say they would be upscale sedans with a higher level of technical sophistication than their competitors. However, numerous insiders said with assurance that the flagship would be powered by an all-new V-12, a 4.0L 230hp derivative of the MX-3’s 1.8L V6. Said to use certain components of the Cosmo coupe sold in Japan, Mazda said both its initial sedans would be built on unique platforms. Described as a more compact and high-tech alternative to the BMW 750iL and Mercedes Benz 600SEL.
Amati officials expressed two car were enough to launch the franchise, and they would study options for future products.
