21992 GMC Yukon Test Drive
General Motors big 4×4 sport-utility vehicles were redesigned for 1992, adopting the front-end sheetmetal and half-ton chassis of the firm’s contemporary generation full-size pickups. Chevrolet kept the Blazer name, but its GMC twin drops Jimmy for Yukon. Both models remained 6-passenger 2-door wagons with drop-down tailgate and top hinged rear window, but featured full steel roofs instead of fiberglass tops aft of the doors.
Against the 1991 models, they were 5-inches longer in wheelbase but stretch only 3-inches more overall. Height was trimmed 2.8-inches, and overall width reduced 2.6-inches. Curb weights, however, increased by some 170 pounds on average.
The only engine was the familiar 5.7-liter V8 with 210-horsepower. Now standard was a 5-speed manual transmission instead of a 4-speed; a 4-speed overdrive automatic returned at extra cost.
Also newly standard was GM’s Insta-Trac 4WD, a part-time system with automatic locking front hubs that allowed shifting between 2WD and 4-High at any speed. It replaced the part-time system with standard manual hubs. Finally, a 4-wheel anti-lock braking system that operated in both 2-and 4WD was now standard. It supplanted a rear-wheel ABS setup that worked in 2WD only.GM’s big 4×4’s were as burly as ever, but more civilized on-road and off. The standard 4WD system was far more convenient, and the new 4-wheel ABS was a powerful attraction. Ford’s Bronco had a broader powerteam lineup and slight price advantage.
