After General Motors took so much heat in the mid Eighties because too many of its models looked the same, GM design was given freedom to make the corporation’s cars look more individual. As a result, Pontiac’s Bonneville was completely restyled.
That new outside sheet metal was unusual and , better in person than in photos. Nice detailing all around, if a bit overdone on the top-line models.
Just as important, however was the interior, where the attention to the instrument panel and seats aid off, with good ergonomics and comfortable, supportive bucket seats. Not a European design, but American at its best.
The front-wheel-drive chassis specification remained little changed, but the tuning was very nice, especially with the W21 Sport Package, which was standard on the to two models and an option on the base car.
Buick provided the V6 engine for the Bonneville, and there were two forms, a 3.8-liter pushrod V6 and a supercharged version, available only on the to-line SSEi model.
