01993 Cadillac Allanté Northstar Test Drive
For 1993, Cadillacs flagship convertible continued as the company’s rolling showcase for new technology. This luxury roadster out of Detroit by way of Pininfarina in Italy entered the new model year equipped with nothing less than a new engine, new transmission, new suspension set up, a pot full of other high tech goods and low tech necessities like dual cup holders in the center armrest. At the head of this heady list of new features was the 295 horsepower 4.6-liter Northstar V8 engine. This power plant was available in other Cadillacs in 1993, but Allanté had it 1st when it was introduced in January of 1982 as a 1993 model. This new source of power was combined with an all new electronically controlled 4 speed automatic transmission. Though Cadillac’s slow selling, two-seater gained that world class V8, that bit of good news was undercut by an announcement that Allanté would not return for 1994.
