01993: Jeep Wrangles Up a New Entry-Level Model
It was 1993, and the YK Jeep Wrangler was on its way. Many of the design cues shown here leaned in the radical direction of the ECCO ground pounder of the future, introduced at the Detroit auto show in 1993. The YK Wrangler was to be bolder and more aggressive makeover of the entry-level jeep model. Remember when the Wrangler was the entry-level Jeep? Where the YJ vertically slotted grill was upright, the YK was to be subtly laid back; where the YJ’s rear quarters were flat, the YK’s would be flared. In up level models, driving lights were drawn as a potential behind protective wire mesh grilles placed in the bumper.
