1993: MR2 Replacement. Son of Supra
The replacement for the slow selling W20 Toyota MR2, the FR Sports, was being readied for launch in Japan in late 1993. Abandoning the mid-engine layout, the new car was rumored to have a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive design and aping Celica’s rounded lines.
Dubbed son of Supra by insiders, the FR would be powered by a normally aspirated or turbocharged derivatives of the 2.0-liter DOHC engine that powered the Celica GT-Four rally car. One major difference four, rather than five, valves er cylinder. Output for the normally aspirated engine was 220 bhp the turbo pulled 240. Engineers were studying the feasibility of a Supra-style six speed manual gearbox to go along with a five-seed manual, while a 5-cog auto was also being considered.
