1993: Tokyo Motor Show

1993-Tokyo2

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Tokyo Motor Show had come to represent the outer edge of the automotive design and technology envelope. Concept vehicles typically showed unusual imagination and flair, often with little link to real-world highways.  However, with reduced budgets and environmental consciousness weighing ever heavier on the industry, the 1993 show had a new look.  The theme for this exhibition, “Ecolution in Car Innovation” (“ecolution” being a combination of ecology and evolution), provided plenty of technical challenge, but little pizzazz. Compared to the flamboyant exercises of previous years, it was largely tame and responsible, possibly a sign of the coming times.
