1994: Fords’ Viper Killer
Apparently fed up with Dodge’s V-10 Viper stealing the “affordable” supercar thunder, Ford was rumored to have had a surprise up its sleeve for the 1995 Detroit auto show. The Ford GT90 was said to be packing a 450-hp supercharged V8 from the company’s modular program, although V6, V10, V12, and even V16 variations were reportedly discussed in Dearborn. What was actually presented at the 95′ NAIAS was more super car than GT, and the V12 was literally two Lincoln V8’s married together and four cylinders removed. More of a testing car for new technologies and design.
Had all of Ford’s marketing “ifs” been satisfied and the production case could have been made, the GT90 – both open air and hard top versions would have been tearing up the road as early as 1998.
