We all witnessed the start of a new era in GM thinking, and everyone took notice of this sporty, high-tech, four-door beauty.  All new?  This was it: a new, crisp-handling platform; a new 4.0-liter/250-horsepower DOHC V-8; a new, cozy passenger compartment, and a new, affordable price tag for such sumptuous surroundings.  Created to compete with Acura, Infiniti, and Lexus, this front-drive bested the Lexus GS 300 and Mercedes-Benz C280 in performance and value during a certain sedan shootout.  traction control, 16-inch wheels, ABS, and dual airbags were standard. Don’t let the Oldsmobile badge deceive, this was an enthusiast’s car. But alas, people did notice the one badge.

  1. Ninety Eight Regency says:

I enjoyed the video review. I heard his little comment about grilles and Oldsmobile specific styling cues I know what Oldsmobiles he was referring to as well. I was looking at the interior in the video and was saying I have all the same stuff in my Ninety Eight and Toronado. My Ninety Eight and the Eighty Eight/ LSS share some of the same controls and features with Aurora. The LSS had the same seats without the power lumbar and the same wheels. The exterior mirrors on that car are also on the Buick Riviera of the same vintage. They said this car was supposed to replace the Ninety-Eight and Toronado in Oldsmobile’s lineup. I am still trying to figure that one out after all these years how. Had they called this model the “New Toronado” they might have sold me on the car. The name did not resonate with me either.
