Dodge rolled out a redesigned Caravan in the spring of 1995 as an early 1996 model with more aerodynamic styling, an optional sliding door on the drivers’s side, and removal seats with built in rollers. The long-wheelbase Grand Caravan was available first. Standard-wheelbase models were added during the summer. Dual air bags and anti-lock brakes were standard.
Initially, all models had front-wheel-drive; all-wheel-drive was added during the 1996 production year. Caravan’s base engine was a new 150-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder with dual overhead camshafts. Three V-6s were available; a 150-hp 3.0-liter; a 158-hp 3.3-liter; and a 166-hp 3.8-liter, all of which were offered previously. All models had a sliding door on the passenger side and a one piece rear liftgate.
THere’s more room for all seating positions and a 1.4-inch lower step-in height for easier entry/exit. New design features included a lower dashboard and larger windows for better visibility. Cup holders were found throughout the interior, as were assorted storage bins, nooks, and crannies for stashing stuff.
