1996 Minivan Comparison Test Drive
Compact minivans enjoyed amazing popularity in the 1990’s. Almost 10 years after this category first appeared, sales continued to climb. While car sales remained stagnant, more and more minivans were being sold. This strong showing prompted manufacturers to come up with increasingly sophisticated models designed to attract buyers and undermine Chrysler’s supremacy in this market sector. Besides launching the category, Chrysler dominated it for the first decade. However, the arrival of the Ford Windstar reduced Chryslers lead over the competition and, for the first time ever, Chryslers models were pitted against a minivan developed on the same design criteria and offering a very similar spec sheet. But the market leader did not stand back passively as newcomers arrived on the scene. For 1996, Chrysler’s response was an entirely revised product, the result of the first extensive changes made to this minivan since it was introduced in 1984.
