1996 Volkswagen GTI VR6 Test Drive

Ever since Volkswagen invented the “hot hatch” market in Europe back in the late 1970’s, every other car in the class has been a variation on the theme laid out by that first GTI.  In 1995, VW reinvigorated the GTI concept by replacing the four-cylinder engine with its 2.8-liter/172-horsepower SOHC narrow -angle VR6 V-6 instead.  Unlike other cars of this ilk, the GTI VR6 was blessed with gobs of low-end torque that encouraged drivers to use every ounce of the sport-tuned suspension and four-wheel disc brakes abilities.  Changes for 1996 were limited to a glovebox beside the passenger-side airbag, a black-leather seating option, and the adoption of OBD-II engine electronics.
