1997 BMW 528i Test Drive
An early arrival for the 1997 model year, BMW’s handsome new 5-series sedan went on sale during spring 1996, working sport-sedan enthusiasts into a rich, creamy lather. What was new? Just about everything, from the rounded unibody, to the reworked suspension, to the shiny bits purring under the hood. The 528i was powered by an enlarged 190-horsepower version of the straight-six that was in the previous car. The upgrade from there was a meaty one, to the 4.4-liter/282-horsepower DOHC V-8 in the 540i. Both engines had horsepower peaks similar to those of the previous mills, but now they backed them up with fat, juicy torque curves.
