1988: Another bunch of Fives
Not resting on their laurels, the people at BMW were advanced with plans to expand the highly acclaimed 5-Series. According to sources in West Germany, the E34 lineup of 5-series would be supplemented in 1991 by a stylish station wagon and a high performance coupe. The Coup’s chassis and powerpants were also scheduled to be shared later by the first ever 5-series drop top. But BMW, its factories ever stretched to capacity, would likely have to subcontract production to an outside coachbuilder. Perhaps the reason they never happened.
