1998 Mercedes Benz CLK Test Drive

Although its front end bears a strong resemblance to that of the E-Class and its shared many mechanical parts with the C-class, Mercedes officials insisted the new CLK320 was in a class by itself – the CL class. Either way this trendy little coupe had a high class identity all its own. Not a hardtop coupe in the Mercedes tradition, the CLK had fixed B-pillars and rear side windows. Options were few, but standard features were generous. It used the E-class 215hp 3.2 liter V6. The 5-speed automatic transmission could adapt its shifting to the way the car was being driven. Another standard feature, “Brake Assist”, sped up the activation of the ABS in panic stops. Only Mercedes offered it at the time.

Neither a sports car nor a family one, the CLK offered affordability, comfort, a sporty feel, and the status of that three pointed star on the hood.
