01998 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner Test Drive
Toyota’s consistently popular compact Tacoma benefited from a gussied-up front end for 1998, and it gained a switchable passenger side airbag. A new grill and headlights (in four-wheel-drive models) advance the stylistic cause, while added cupholders and an extra power point boosted interior convenience. There was also a new optional Toyota Racing Development off-road package. The Tacoma came in regular and XtraCab configurations with plenty of options and packages to choose from. Rear-drive versions start with a 2.4-liter/142-horsepower inline four. Base-level four-wheel drive trucks got a 2.7-liter/150-horsepower inline four. A sweet 3.4-liter/190-horsepower V-6 was optional in either drive configuration.
