Ford popped the clutch in 1999 with big changes to America’s favorite pony car, the Mustang. new edgy sheet metal gave the Mustang a fresh look. Interior changes and new seats updated the cockpit. To help handling and ride, rear suspension travel and track were increased. Better still, all three engines now made a bunch more power. On the bottom end, the 3.8-liter/190-horsepower OHV V-6 was up 40 horses; the 4.6-liter SOHC V-8 GT jumped by 25 horses, to a total of 250. The Cobra gained 15 horses, with a revised 4.6-liter/320-horsepower DOHC V-8. Major bombshell: the Cobra would have fully independent rear suspension, a first for the Mustang. Corvette could hear hoof beats.
