Perhaps one of the most honest expressions of the priorities luxury sport/utility buyers truly had, Lexus’ RX300 put the emphasis on roadgoing luxury and graded dirt road competence. Boulder climbing and major slop slinging were left to other vehicles. Built with unibody construction, fully independent suspension, and all wheel drive, the RX300 had one of the best highway rides of any sport/utility vehicle, but gave up some ground in load carrying and trailer towing ability. A sophisticated 3.0-liter/220-horsepower DOHC V-6 and variable intake valve timing propelled this Lexus to 60 mph in 8.8 seconds. Introduced as a 1998 model, the RX300 was a carryover for 1999.
