1999 Volkswagen Jetta Test Drive

With a hint of the spherical Beetle silhouette in its new sheet metal, the Volkswagen Jetta was clearly the shape of things to come for the revitalized German carmaker.  The most popular German-badged car in America, the Jetta rode on an all-new platform with 30-percent more torsional stiffness, which elevated interior quiet, and improved ride quality.  The basic GL version and mid-level GLS were powered by the same 2.0-liter/115-horsepower SOHC inline-four that was a VW staple.  Optional in the GLS and standard in the GLX was a 2.8-liter/172-horsepower DOHC V-6 (aka VR6) powerplant.  Remote central locking, premium audio, and side airbags wer all standard in the Jetta.
