1999 Volkswagen Passat Wagon Test Drive

For Passat fans interested in venturing into low-grip climes, in 1999, Volkswagen offered the Passat GLX Synchro, with full-time all-wheel-drive.  That was the 1999 new years key advancement-not bad, considering the Passat was all new just the year before.  The white-coated engineers at VW had also taken the opportunity to make a few improvements to their flagship sedan’s side-airbag-equipped interior, as well.  Engines were unchanged, with a 1.8-liter/150-horsepower turbocharged inline-four serving as the basic offering, and a 2.8-liter/190-horsepower 30-valve V-6 from the Audi engine family.  This roomy comfortable wagon had considerable sporting ability with the V-6 purring under the hood.
