1999 Volvo S80 T6 Test Drive

As the latest expression of Volvo’s emerging stylistic transformation, the new flagship S80 sedan filled the slot vacated by the departed S90 sedan and V90 wagons. Taking a steady bead on competition like the 5 series, E-class, GS series, and others, the S80 touted the largest, most comfortable interior in the most advanced safety engineering in Volvo history. In addition to side airbags, the S80 had whiplash protection system front seats, and inflatable side curtains that extended from A to C pillars. Solid, well made, and very comfortable, the S80’s standard engine was a 2.9L inline six; the hot T-6 version carried a 2.8 turbo inline six.
