GM now offered five variants of their big station wagons, completely revamped for 2000. The Tahoe, Yukon and Suburban though based on the make’s fresh GMT800 pickups, the names remained unchanged. Besides the rather stripped down to essentials base versions, Chevrolet offered three other trim levels for the Tahoe: LS, LT and Sport, SL SLE and SLT for the GMC cousin. The Tahoe/Suburban and Yukon/XL 4×4’s came with a conventional transfer box with floor shifter, except on the LT and SLT equipped with standard AutoTrac.  4X2 Tahoe-Yukon and Suburban versions were also available.  Engine options ranged from 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L, all from the new family of truck V8’s, all matched with a four-speed automatic transmission, variable assist power steering, dual airbags, ABS and intermittent wipers.  More elaborate models benefited from climate control, cruise control, power windows, tilt steering wheel, remote control mirrors and alloy wheels.

At long last these big GM SUVs fell into step with their competitors.  Their modern engines and much more rigid bodies made them a lot more roadworthy.
