Gone after 23 years was the Volkswagen (nee Rabbit/Golf) Cabrio. not to worry, it was replaced in spirit by the New Beetle Convertible. Arriving in January 2003, the power drop-top New Beetle would warm the hearts as well as the balding domes of those who also remembered the original Beetle Cabriolet. Fittingly, it was offered in classic ’50s and ’60s VW colors as well as contemporary tints. It would have pop up rollover protection, no basket handle here! A new six-speed automatic got the most from the 2.0L engine (a five-speed manual was standard), and the 1.8LT was available months after its introduction.
