Chrysler’s 1981 front wheel drive compacts, known as the K-cars were supposed to be better at fuel economy than GM’s X-car. Not surprising, since they weighed less and had smaller standard engines as standard equipment. With the new clothes the K-car would come in about 1000 pounds and 7 mpg better than its Volare/Aspen forebears. Though no photographs were available in early 1982, the production versions obviously did not look as handsome as this rendering did.
