1985: Merc’s 1987 Skin Job

Even though there was an all new Cougar/Thunderbird in the wings, sources deep within Ford verified the, then current personal coupes were in for a reskin. The Mercury Cougar would sport a new Mercedesoid restyled nose piece and a revised bumper.  The bumper would incorporate a stylized version of Mercury’s traditional vertical motif radiator opening, no too unlike the divisions’s, then upcoming Sable sedan. An all new rear quarter panel with a semi-enclosed wheel opening was projected to be used on the update. Along with the supposed wheelhouse contour, the quarter featured a larger rear window, styled in the same fashion as AMC’s Gremlin.  In an attempt to further differentiate itself form its Ford counterpart the Mercury was to be fitted with thin horizontal tail-lamps on the top of the rear edge of the decklid.
