1987: Was There a Saab Planned Too?
Alfa Romeo asked the Pininfarina styling house to shape a convertible and a 2-door coupe version of its 164 luxury sedan. The drop top, with a power operated roof that folded into the trunk, and planned assembly at a new production line at Pininfarina’s factory in Turin, Italy. Both were expected to share the same floorpan and running gear as the sedan.
The 164 was launched in Europe in 1987, and reached U.S. showrooms in 1989. The coupe was expected in 1990, the convertible in 1991.
