1986: Project 892 Z-Car
The resemblance of this Nissan development code number to the nomenclature of a certain highly regarded Porsche modes was probably just a coincidence, but it was not the first time for a Japanese maker to target that particular Teutonic blend. With Project 892, Nissan’s more immediate concern was to reverse the slide of its revered Z-car, precipitated by the arrival of Mazda’s new RX-7 and Toyota Supra.
Drastic measures were called for, and what was happened was a completely new model with a new engine, suspension, and substantial restyling, just after three years after the ‘Z31’ was launched. While the Z32 will live on as an iconic design and while I am glad they stepped out of the previous Z formula, these renderings are always fun to look on, as what might have been!
