11983 Ford Motor Company Model Lineup Updates
There was little question that 1983 was Ford’s year for new product excitement. The company was the last to get with the downsizing and front-drive programs, but came back very strong with three winners: the Escort/Lynx, EXP/LN7, and high performance Mustang/Capri. After 3 years of personal reductions, consolidations, plant reassignments, and intensive labor negotiations, the company was down to fighting weight and its product programs were in place through 1986. For 1983, Ford introduced all new Thunderbird/Cougar cars, Tempo/Topaz front drive compacts, a pair of turbocharged electronically fuel injected engines, even better performance from Mercury Capri & Ford Mustang V8 models, and a pair of new intermediates, the LTD/Marquis family, that replaced the Granada/Cougar lines that were only two years old. Waiting in the wings for the late introduction were the rebodied Mustang SVO, the Mustang convertible, and a special turbocharged version of the all-new Thunderbird, as well as new mini truck variations on the Ranger including four wheel drive, optional V6 engine, and the Bronco II. What it all meant was that Ford introduced more new models than any time in the company’s 80-year history – more in fact than all the domestic competition combined.
