The alliance commuter/family car became AMC signature passenger car for 1987. The Encore as a distinct model offering was discontinued, but most of the Encore versions including hatchback body styles carried forward under Alliance badges.
Standard engine remained renault’s OHV 1.4 L 4 cylinder engine with Bendix single point fuel injection. If ever a reason existed to opt for an extra-cost engine, this basic four was it. Interminably slow with 4 or 5 speed manuals, the engine coupled to a 3-speed automatic available in all models save the convertible was almost dangerously slow. Its appalling lack of usable horsepower made freeway merging an unnecessarily delicate maneuver. The soul optional engine for two and three door sedan and three and five door hatches was the 1.7 liter OHC 4 with Bendix fuel injection. The Alliance included a new passive restraint system only in US 2 and 3 door sedan and hatchback with L and DL trim levels. It was optional in 2 door sedans and 3 door hatches, and not available at all in Canada bound cars. The array of optional equipment was broad, and amenities arranged upward to an interesting premium stereo scheme called accusound by Jensen.
