1992 Mercury Cougar Test Drive
It makes one wonder why Mercury didn’t sell far more Cougar XR7’s. One guess is people just weren’t aware of the car’s great combination of comfort, performance, and style. For the second year in a row, the spry cat from the Lincoln-Mercury division took honors in Motor Trend’s “Personal Luxury” ratings. And it was up against some pretty mean competition that included its supercharged T-Bird SC cousin.
The Cougar returned essentially unchanged from 1991 (for its 25th anniversary), but benefited from more luxurious seats and interior trim plus restyled 16-inch wheels. The top-line XR7’s ride was smooth enough to please sensitive passengers, while its handling on twisty two-laners will satisfy even you. The only engine offered was a 200-horsepower version of the Mustang’s 5.0-liter V-8, and performance was good. A four-speed overdrive automatic drove the rear wheels for a traditional American car feel.
