With all the fuss about Infiniti and Lexus, it was possible to forget that one of the nicer sedans on the imported range was over at the Nissan dealership; it was called Maxima. Nissan just made it a bit harder to forget.
This was, of course, was its 4-door, front-drive sedan with independent strut based suspension at each end and what was, one of the more handsome designs in its price class. Two models continued for 1992 SE and GXE, with minor grille and taillight changes.
Inside was an equally good-looking design, with comfortable supportive seats and new instrumentation graphics for 1992.
But the best part was under the hood, a 24-valve, DOHC version of the 3.-liter V-6 as standard in the SE version. With the added valves, power increased to 190-bhp and 190 lb-ft of torque. The SE could be had with either a 5-speed manual, or 4-speed automatic transmission.
An important ingredient that came standard on all Maxima’s was a ride and handling combination that made these cars the sort of dual-nature cars everyone likes… a pussycat on the freeway, and a tiger when the road became twisty.
