The burgeoning light truck import market was extremely competitive and GM and its Isuzu affiliate were trying to get a piece of the pie. The Isuzu was just another model which really didn’t have enough to distinguish it from the rest of the crowd, especially w/ a name like ‘Truck’. While it did not lead the category, it was diverse in its available versions, and with a freshly redesigned body in a more aerodynamic style for 1988, it wasn’t ugly.
But with its handsome good looks, vast model choices, spacious cabin 4-wheel disc brakes on LS models, it wasn’t enough to overcome many shortcomings, like lack of a V6, a rear axle that only behaved on smooth pavement, and uncomfortable seats. It wouldn’t be until 1996 until a new Isuzu ‘Truck’ was introduced, this time w/ a friendly name.
