At the 1993 Detroit International Auto Show, Porsche’s booth was tucked in a corner. But that didn’t stop the crowds seeking it out. On display was a stunning roadster that looked like a modern incarnation of an old Porsche 550 Spyder. And it looked far too detailed and finished to be just a concept car. Less than four years after Porsche started putting the design on paper, it actually went on sale. It looked to be Porsche’s most successful new offering since the go-go 80s. At first, Porsche intended to put a numeric badge on the car, calling it the 986. but the buying public liked the Boxster name so much that it stuck. Porsche finally realized it had to do more than just build cars that met its engineering requirements, the company also had to market them.
