This is what the 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am could have looked like, if they didn’t toss a last-minute curve. The external look seems to remain basically the same with a slight difference in the headlight area. The improvements were more subtle and more enthusiast-oriented. Four-wheel disc brakes, and a nicely massage suspension treatment with stiffer springs, different suspension bushings and revised shock absorber valving were being considered. 1978 T/A’s had the owners of high-speed Exotica wondering if maybe they made a mistake, so it should be interesting to see how they react to the 1979. 1979 T/A’s will also be the last with a 400 engine, from then on you didn’t get anything bigger than a 350. Pontiac built a new plant to build just Firebirds, and they plan on about 160,000 of them, half of which were T/A’s. Seems like a large number until you consider they sold everyone they build, and just about as soon as they build it.
