1981 Chevrolet Truck-Blazer-Suburban Promo – Lloyd Reuss
Lloyd E Reuss, director of engineering for the Chevrolet brand in 1981, father of Mark Reuss, current VP of GM North America, explains the important step ahead for the 80’s, is Chevy’s newly styled for 1981 Chevrolet Truck, Blazer and Suburban. Throughout the video you will hear a repeated theme. Same toughness, lighter materials, and better fuel efficiency. Sounds like today’s claims doesn’t it. Starting with design, 1981 looked like the beginning of Chevy’s long lasting stacked lamp design, that endured for decades to come, if obviously altered for evolving times. 
But to claim this ‘grille’ job was wind tunnel shaped is a bit of a stretch, considering the same basic shape was unaltered since around 1974. But with a weight reduction of around 200 pounds, and a new ESC 5.0 liter V8, with the all too common assertion these days, ‘Power of a larger V8, with the efficiency of a 6″, you can certainly admire the fuel economy gains versus its 1980 counterparts. From standard toughness like double sided bed walls, that a transmission cant penetrate to options like a rear seat in a four door truck, ‘non wood’ bed for the stylish step side, to the auto locking hubs in 4WD models, the changes to the 81 models appear extensive. But to claim that only those with 4WD need to get where they’re going….? Come on!

It was not really a complete redesign. This was basically mid-term freshening inside and out. The main body itself had not changed much since 1973. For trucks, the main body was from 1973-1987. For Blazer and Suburban, 1973-1991.
