01983: Foreshadowing Allante
After a couple decades, the Pininfarina design studio in Turn, Italy took on a project for Cadillac, the last one being the 1959-1960 Eldorado Brougham sedans. The thrust of the project was simply to have Pininfarina create a highly technological 4-seater coupe that would have competed effectively with the prestige leaders from Europe, for which the leading American luxury manufacturer had no competitive model. The Pininfarina project was expected to debut in 1986, though in 1983 no one at Cadillac confirmed the existence of the project. It was likely to be derived from the GM N-car series that still had not debuted itself. It was noted that the most unusual aspect of the project was the car to be built and upholstered in Italy, then shipped to the US for drivetrain and suspension, wiring, and additional soft trim.
