01989 Plymouth Acclaim Manufacturer Promo
The Acclaim had the spirit in more ways than one. On the one hand, it was a fresh attempt by Chrysler to put yet another face on the ancient K-Car platform. On the other hand, it’s identical to the Dodge Spirit.
It too was a mid-sized, 4-door sedan with more space than was apparent. On the outside it looked a lot like the passing generation of mid-lux Japanese cars such as the Maxima and Cressida. But, this was not necessarily a car for lovers of the latest in cars. It was transportation that was affordable with about as much flair as you could afford for the money.
In the market, the Acclaim went against the Corsica, Grand Am, Tempo and Accord and, if pre-production prototypes were to be believed, it was at least the match for everything in its class, except for Honda.
Thankfully, the Acclaim was free of most of the irritation eccentricities usually found in Chrysler products. Things fit, the seats, the steering wheel, and there was a pleasant response when you stepped on the throttle, regardless of engine. There were several to choose among: a 2.5-liter fuel-injected engine, both normally aspirated and turbocharged, and a3.0-liter V6 that came with a new electronically controlled, 4-speed automatic transaxle that was as good as these things got. Although the fV6 didn’t make quite as much power or torque as the Turbo 2.5, it didn’t have the inherent buzz of a 4-cylinder and ran with a smoothness not usually found in front-drove Plymouths.
