01990: Lexus Soars with Potential V12?
Rumors were ‘soaring’ that the Lexus coupe in the pipelines was based on the LS400 full-size sedan. The BMW 850i sized coupe in fact was based on the next-generation Z30 Toyota Soarer. That Soarer was unveiled in spring of 1991. The newcomer was replete with leading edge technology (for the early 1990s), reportedly even on-board navigation, and active suspension. Engines ranged from a 2.5L 24-valve inline six to a 4.0L V8.
Lexus LS400 project leader Ichiro Suzuki made it no secret that Toyota had a V12 well beyond the drawing board stage, and headed for a ‘sporting’ model. What better way for Toyota to counter the BMW 850i than with a coupe powered by a 5.0 liter, 48-valve, quad cam V12?
