1991: A Panamera for the 1990’s?

1991- Although Porsche Cars North America denied it, sources offered, that when the 928 bowed out in about 1994, it would be replaced by a five-door Porsche 989. Designed by Harm Lagaay and engineered by Ulrich Bez (fathers of the BMW Z1), it would be a challenger to the BMW M5 and Mercedes Benz E500. The controversial sports-car project would devour more than $600 million in development costs.

Two engines rumored: the 3.0-liter four used in the 968 and a brand new multi-valve V-8, around 4.2 liters. The 989’s performance would be enhanced by generous use of recyclable lightweight materials.  Also considered was a short wheelbase coupe derivative to help meet the cost of investment.
